Cairo Time
2009 (Ruba Nadda) PG, 88 min
Starring: Alexandra Siddiq, Patricia Clarkson
Patricia Clarkson, well-known for her roles in Six Feet Under and High Art, plays a happily married woman who goes to Cairo to meet her husband for a three-week vacation. Her husband (Tom McCamus), unavoidably delayed, sends his former security officer, Tareq, played by Alexander Siddig, as her escort in the city. Thus begins a romance, and a role for Siddig that’s a bit of a departure from the oil magnate or outer space traveller he played in Syriana and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Parallels have been drawn from this film to Lost in Translation, which also centres on an unexpected romantic relationship occurring in a city outside the characters' comfort zones. Cairo itself can be perceived as a character in the film. Cairo Time won the Best Canadian Feature Award at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival.
