Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

2009 (Mark Waters) 14A, 100 min
Starring: Jennifer Garner, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Douglas

Shameless roué Connor Mead (McConaughey), who believes bonding with women should last one night and not a lifetime, tries to convince his younger brother to leave his bride at the altar and return to blissful, unrestrained promiscuity. But on the night before the wedding, Connor gets a “wake-up call” in the spectral form of his late uncle Wayne (deliciously played by Douglas), who inspired the lecherous lifestyle. Connor is whirled away to face the ghosts of his girlfriends, past, present and future. Those jilted women have a lot to say to the bad boy of relationships. Will it be enough for him to turn over a new leaf or will it be humbug all the way? Co-star, the always lovely Garner, works her screen magic as the girl who waits in the wings, still believing in his (deeply hidden) good qualities; ynd the supporting cast (Douglas, Emma Stone and Robert Forster) shine in this relationship version of A Christmas Carol. Probably, not the traditional date movie, but there is enough fun being poked at itself to make a lively, post-screening discussion.
