According to Irish tradition, a woman can propose to a man on February 29, leap day. Anna (Adams) decides this is what she will do to become engaged to her rather staid boyfriend Jeremy (Scott), who has gone to Dublin on business. On the way from the U.S. to Ireland, a storm forces her plane to land in Wales instead. After another disastrous journey on a boat, she lands on the Irish coast. Coming upon a surly innkeeper, Declan (Matthew Goode), she gets him to agree to drive her to Dublin. A series of incidents force Anna and Declan into many humourous situations before they finally arrive in Dublin. Although the ending is no surprise in this romantic comedy, it does play into modern ideas of courtship and marriage.
