Near Dark
1987 (Kathryn Bigelow) R, 98 min
Starring: Adrian Pasdar, Bill Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, Lance Henriksen
The vampires of Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark are not your "I'm a vampire but I want to be integrated into human society" like HBO's True Blood vampires, nor are these "I'm a vampire but I don't drink human blood" like the popular Twilight series of books and films. Bigelow's vampires are bloodsucking, marginalised, fully debauched, bona fide demons who roam the Southern US states feeding their bloodlust without refrain or much remorse. With an electronica soundtrack by Tangerine Dream, this film has developed a large cult following, and it transcends several genres including the western, the biker film and the classic vampire movie. In Near Dark, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates her incredible skill as an action director, paving the way for subsequent films such as Point Break, Blue Steel, Strange Days and, most recently, the Academy Award-nominated film for best picture, The Hurt Locker.
