2009 (Ethan Coen, Joel Coen) 14A, 105 min
Starring: Fred Melamed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, Sari Lennick
A Serious Man, the Coen brothers’ latest offering, is set, with meticulous attention to detail, in Minnesota, 1967. The story finds Larry Gopnik, physics professor, on the cusp of securing tenure, the Cadillac of job security in the academic world. About to become the kind of good man and provider he thought he was supposed to strive to become, poor Larry learns instead that his wife is leaving him for his annoyingly smarmy friend. Meanwhile, a Korean student is trying to bribe him, his brother Arthur is slowly spiraling downward and getting in trouble with the law, and his son and daughter are stealing cash from his wallet for drugs and a nose job, respectively. Trying to make sense of how his life has come to this, Larry seeks advice from three Rabbis that leaves him more befuddled than before. A quirky exploration of faith, and social expectations that also showcases an impeccable selection of men’s ties!
