'Tis Autumn
2007 (Raymond De Felitta) PG, 100 min
Ever heard of Jackie Paris? Unless you’re an old-school jazz geek, probably not. But in the fifties and sixties, Paris was one of the coolest singers around, with Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and other legends counting themselves fans of his knowing, beautiful voice. Sound aside, Paris possessed hepcat style and great charisma. But just as he was poised for superstardom, his record label pulled the plug... and Paris vanished. Forty-odd years later, director De Felitta investigates where the singer went and what the heck happened to his career (theories: mob involvement, personality issues, changing music tastes). Because it’s structured around a tantalizing mystery, ‘Tis Autumn is never a dull documentary, and De Felitta’s findings don’t disappoint. Plus, the soundtrack will blow your wig off, man, whether you’re a Paris devotee or about to become one.
