Twilight
2008 (Catherine Hardwicke) PG, 122 min
Starring: Kristen Stewart, Nikki Reed, Robert Pattinson
Director Catherine Hardwicke earned her credibility portraying angst-y teenagers in her 2003 directorial film debut Thirteen. It's interesting to see Hardwicke's foray into more mainstream material such as this film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's bestselling novel Twilight, which is also about teenagers dealing with a rather unusual set of circumstances. Bella Swan (Stewart) moves to a small town and falls in love with the most seemingly aloof boy at school, Edward Cullen (Pattinson). Only Edward and his family are all vampires. And they don't eat humans- they've sworn off them out of respect, preferring to hunt large game animals. But for some reason Bella's blood is very tempting to Edward, more tempting to him than any other person's. Twilight's success has already ensured a sequel, and fans of the novels will appreciate this film adaptation.
