Some Like It Hot

Some Like it Hot

1959 (Billy Wilder) PG, 130 minutes

Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon

On the run from the mob after witnessing a crime, musicians Joe (Curtis) and Jerry (Lemmon, in an Oscar-winning performance) don ill-fitting gowns, pancake makeup and frumpy wigs to become Josephine and Geraldine, performers with an all-girl band. Some Like it Hot has so many things going for it, it’s no wonder it topped the American Film Institute’s list of the best American comedies in 2000. Curtis does double deception, also pretending to be a suave millionaire in order to woo his seductive, ukelele-playing bandmate Sugar Kane (Monroe). Monroe gives her iconic performance of “I Wanna Be Loved by You.” Lemmon fights off the advances of a smitten tycoon. “One of the enduring treasures of the movies, a film of inspiration and meticulous craft,” raves Roger Ebert.
