Adam
2009 (Adam Mayer) PG, 98 min
Starring: Amy Irving, Hugh Dancy, Peter Gallagher, Rose Byrne
Adam is a tender story about the love that unfolds between a sweet, bright, socially awkward man suffering from Asperger's Syndrome and his new neighbour Beth, a teacher and aspiring children’s author. Throughout the film, Adam struggles to find the best way to communicate his feelings to Beth. He introduces her to a family of raccoons he discovered in Central Park, and while precariously hanging from a rope, tries to wash her windows for her after she complains that they are too dirty to see out of. Meanwhile, Beth endeavors to understand Adam’s quirky behaviour, while gently coaxing him into social gatherings and helping him look for a new job. In their quiet efforts to understand and make a connection with one another, this seemingly unlikely match reminds us that love, while often difficult and riddled with complicated missteps and miscommunications, can also be very simple.
