BOB FOSSE – MORE SMOKE PLEASE

On Sundays in August, the Revue Cinema and curator Alicia Fletcher celebrate the originator of jazz hands, the godfather of Razzle Dazzle–the multi-hyphenate genius who rose from the ranks of seedy burlesque houses to Hollywood and Oscar heavyweight, the incomparable Bob Fosse. A vaudevillian, choreographer, actor, director, consummate womanizer, and prolific EGOT-tour-de-force, his contributions to dance, Broadway and film are immeasurable. A Footlights Svengali, Fosse and his productions were as notorious as they were celebrated. As a master of erotica, the director channeled the charged environment he was raised within–touring America’s burlesque circuit as a child performer in the ‘30s–into resurrecting and refining the big spectacle musical for the New Hollywood era. With his patented “isolated moves,” Fosse’s contributions as a choreographer and director are fabled–so celebrate his upcoming centenary on the big screen with 35mm and recent restorations, only at the Revue Cinema!

“I’m going to be a great film star! That is, if booze and sex don’t get me first…”

–Sally Bowles

“Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome” to Weimar Germany’s infamous Kit Kat Klub, where “life is beautiful,” and pleasure reigns supreme.  The first musical to receive an “X” certificate, 1972’s CABARET garnered Bob Fosse universal acclaim and record-breaking Oscar gold, including a statue for Best Director, as well as prizes for Liza Minnelli for her performance as Sally Bowles and Joel Grey for portraying the infamous Master of Ceremonies.

An adaptation of Kander and Ebb’s musical, which was in turn inspired by Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin, CABARET depicts the waning of the illustrious and infamous Weimar Era, wherein artistic evolution was born out of freedom of expression, and the banishment of sexual mores. Minnelli is the Kit Kat Klub’s resident songstress, Sally Bowles–the ultimate Weimar siren, an aspiring actress obsessed with movie stardom. Pairing up with an English newcomer (Michael York), Sally embarks to make life beautiful for both. “Literate, bawdy, sophisticated, sensual, cynical, heart-warming, and disturbingly thought-provoking” (Roger Ebert), CABARET revels in decadence and excess, while simultaneously representing the dark undercurrent that led to the rise of fascism. (ALICIA FLETCHER)
