The films are hot, but the Revue’s AC will be cranked for the ten films in this summer’s Heat Wave lineup.
Heat Wave at the Revue Cinema, a lineup of the greatest summer movies ever made, continues on July 8th with the sweaty summer classic LIONS LOVE (…AND LIES) with an introduction by Apparatus Theory curator, SAFFRON MAEVE!
How dare you touch me! Don’t you know I’m supposed to be divine?
Moved by the “shower of freedom” of 1960s American counterculture, Agnès Varda took to Los Angeles in the summer of 1968 to shoot Lions Love (. . . and Lies), her first of five “California films.” She transplants New York City to the balmy Hollywood Hills, with Warhol Factory star Viva, Hair co-conspirators James Rado and Gerome Ragni, and filmmaker Shirley Clarke starring in this meta film about a sweaty throuple cohabiting and indulging in each other. Topics of discussion include sex, stardom, political assassinations, and performance as these flighty bohemians unmake and reassemble the world around them. In keeping also with Apparatus Theory, Lions Love (. . . and Lies) muses on the art of filmmaking, with Varda and Clarke vying for the role of director in an otherwise orderless commune.
