THE HIDDEN FORTRESS Presented by BLACK BELT CINEMA!
As a bloody war wages between two clans in feudal Japan, two bumbling peasants lured by the promise of gold unknowingly escort a princess and her general across hostile enemy territory towards a fortress hidden in the mountains. Starring everyone’s favourite feral samurai Toshiro Mifune, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS was a much needed box office hit for director Akira Kurosawa. The immense critical and commercial success of SEVEN SAMURAI in 1954 earned Kurosawa a tremendous amount of goodwill with Toho studios, but after a string of middling arthouse melodramas he knew he’d soon need another box office smash. 1958’s THE HIDDEN FORTRESS achieved that goal and then some, becoming Kurosawa’s biggest hit to date. Blending his signature humour, rousing Samurai action, and compassionate humanity, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS is not only remembered as one of Kurosawa’s most entertaining films but also a primary influence on George Lucas’s STAR WARS.
