DIRECTOR’S CUT! 25th ANNIVERSARY SCREENING!
Join Dumpster Raccoon Cinema as it descends into the darkest depths of neo-noir with Alexander Proyas’s forgotten hard-boiled sci-fi disasterpiece, DARK CITY!!
In a nightmarish metropolis that has never seen the sun, John (Rufus Sewell) awakens in a bathtub to the grisly sight of a murder – a murder he apparently committed. Fleeing into the endless night, he tries to make sense of the Kafkaesque amnesia and implacable authorities that pursue him, only to slowly realize it is not just his mind that it is broken – it is the entire world.
Conceived as a dizzying, dreadful homage to the noir genre, with stars Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connolly and William Hurt, Dark City was hailed as a new masterpiece of sci-fi horror; Roger Ebert praised it as “a film so original and exciting, it stirred my imagination like Metropolis and 2001: A Space Odyssey,” while James Berardinelli said “We don’t just coolly observe the bizarre, ever-changing skyline; we plunge into the city’s benighted depths, following the protagonist as he explores the secrets of this grim place where the sun never shines. Dark City has as stunning a visual texture as that of any movie that I’ve seen.”
And then it bombed. And then it disappeared.
Ahead of its time, a box office calamity, Dark City was forgotten. Predecessor to the black trenchcoat hyper-slickness of the 2000s (Blade, The Matrix, Underworld), it has become an underrated cult classic – one you have to see on the big screen to believe!! – ANTHONY OLIVEIRA
