50th Anniversary Screening!

“The most virtuoso example of sophisticated kaleidoscopic farce that American moviemakers have ever come up with.” -critic Pauline Kael

A day in the life of Beverly Hills celebrity hairdresser George (Warren Beatty) as he ambles around Los Angeles, juggling paramours and hookups on the eve of the 1968 U.S. presidential election, directed by Hal Ashby from a screenplay by Robert Towne.  The self-absorbed womanizer flits around Republication Party election fêtes and bohemian drug parties, Bel Air, and the Hollywood Hills in this satire of politics and sexual mores that’s set against the backdrop of Richard Nixon’s election, but from a cynical decidedly post-Watergate perspective. With production design by Richard Sylbert and costumes by Anthea Sylbert (both of Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown), and strong performances by Lee Grant (who won Best Supporting Actress), Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn and Jack Warden—and Carrie Fisher, 17, in her feature debut.

Presented with an introduction by series host Nathalie Atkinson.
