A ghastly backstage story dedicated to one of the most pivotal points in the history of moving images, SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE was an arthouse vampire flick for a new century. Set in 1921, as German Expressionist director F.W. Murnau (John Malkovich) embarks on what will become his most famed production–an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula–SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE is a surreal, deliciously macabre meta-masterwork. Based on the urban legend that Max Schreck, the mysterious Weimar-era “actor” who embodied NOSFERATU, was a real-life vampire, the Nicolas Cage-produced millennial masterpiece gave us one of the greatest undead performances in the history of film–Willem Dafoe as Count Orlok. A project meant for Cage to star in, he rightfully stepped aside when the legendary Dafoe expressed interest. Nominated for an Oscar (that he should have won), Dafoe’s performance was career-defining. A true symphony of horrors, SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE is also hilarious, thanks to Orlok’s inability to blend in with the crew of mortals and his fellow “actors.” Amazingly, Dafoe balances the uncanny horror of Orlok’s violence with empathy for his suffering, paralleling what made Murnau’s original so captivating.
