LUSTING AFTER SINFUL PLEASURES

A respected priest volunteers for an experimental procedure that may lead to a cure for a deadly virus. He gets infected and dies, but a blood transfusion of unknown origin brings him back to life. Now, he’s torn between faith and bloodlust, and has a newfound desire for the wife of a childhood friend.

From the writer/director of OLD BOY, NO OTHER CHOICE, and STOKER, Park Chan-wook’s stab at the vampire film gets into you like an infection, a deliberate progression from faith and shame to carnality and gushing blood. The film sidesteps tradition lore in favour of a thoughtful look at human nature, how belief shapes and cripples us, and the consequences of unfettered desire. At the same time, it is far from subtle; revelling in its violence, sexuality, and pitch-black humour. THIRST unapologetically goes for the jugular. (STEVEN LANDRY)
