Hold Up: CLUELESS (1995)

 

 

HOLD UP’s June selection promises to transport you to Beverly Hills, where the sun is shining, yellow plaid is in style, and it’s totally okay to have a crush on your step-brother. Gleefully self-aware, delightfully earnest, and thoroughly hilarious, CLUELESS (1995) is a high fashion story about the upper echelons of a Beverly Hills high school in the closest thing to a Barbie movie we had in the 90’s. It’s a tale about fleeting fame, the artifice and fragility of high school pecking orders, and how real always recognize real. 

 

 

Meet Cher (Alicia Silverstone), a shallow teen-turned-matchmaker whose attempts to unite two lonely teachers inspires her to adopt Tai, a clumsy, rough-around-the-edges new girl (Brittany Murphy), as her newest pet project. However, Cher’s fairy godmother magic works a little too well, and she accidentally helps Tai grow even more popular than her. Learning a lesson in humility, Cher begins to make space for her authentic self, and discovers true love was right under her nose the whole time – SPOILERS: it’s her step-brother, Josh (Paul Rudd).  -ALICE ROSE
