What’s your favourite scary movie? Chances are, it’s spoofed in the 2000 satire film SCARY MOVIE. Written by Marlon and Shawn Wayans, and directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, SCARY MOVIE is an unapologetic send up of nearly every popular horror, thriller, and mystery film of the 90s. And with only a few shots left in the chamber, it sets its sights on teen movie tropes.
This Halloween season, join HOLD UP for a throwback to one of the greatest parody films of all time. While it may never be added to the Criterion Collection, SCARY MOVIE is a chance to turn your brain off and laugh along. Not much of the film holds up (The Wayans’ signature racial stereotyping and at least one obligatory homophobic gag), but we all deserve a guilty pleasure once in a while.
ABOUT THE FILM
With not so much a plot as a loosely woven series of parody sketches, SCARY MOVIE follows Cindy (Anna Faris) and her high school friends as they try to survive a masked serial killer. Suspecting the killer is exacting revenge on the group for a hit-and-run, Cindy and her friends avoid the police, and rely on their own means to unmask the killer on their own.
