You voted and the winner of Hollywood Suite’s “Ghosts” Movie Madness bracket is… Hausu, aka House (1977)!
Kick-off Shocktober with Nobuhiko Obayashi’s psychedelic, hallucinatory, spectral schoolgirl saga House! An indescribable visual masterwork, for his directorial debut Obayashi conjured a singular ghost story from the premise devised by his then school-age daughter Chigumi (he was originally asked by Toho Studios to riff off the global success of Jaws and instead went rogue). Travelling to her “ailing” aunt’s country estate and accompanied by six of her classmates, Gorgeous (Kimiko Ikegami) and her crew are confronted by a phantasmagoric fever dream from which they might not escape. Presided over by a fiendish white cat, Gorgeous’s aunt (Yoko Minamida) appears to be less enfeebled, and more demonically charged, with her house coming alive to terrorize the girls. An initial box office bomb that nearly destroyed his career, House was soon to become one of the most beloved international cult classics of all time and a true Shocktober classic.
