“All the news behind the news… and some hippie smut.”
This September, Neon Dreams takes you behind the curtain of Boston news rag, the “Back Bay Mainline”, and into the lives of the lovable freaks that keep it running. Joan Micklin Silver’s Between The Lines is a warm, hilarious, and refreshingly offbeat film recently rescued from obscurity and presented on a 2K restoration from Cohen Media.
Micklin (herself a former reporter for the Village Voice) creates a lived-in world that takes you through the dive bars, record stores, pawn shops, strip clubs, and employee lounges of 1977 Boston where a ragtag group of broke but passionate journalists find their livelihoods threatened by a potential corporate takeover of the alternative newspaper where they all work. What proceeds is an intimate comedy about workplace camaraderie and fighting for what’s important to you in the face of an ever-changing social climate that values corporate greed over community.
Featuring debut performances from John Heard, Joe Morton, Marilu Henner, Raymond J. Barrie, and Jeff Goldblum (to name a few), Between The Lines is a top-tier ’70s hangout party that will have you gasping for breath through the laughs while carving out time for you to know and love its characters. Bring a friend and leave the cinema feeling positively elated.
This screening and others are made possible thanks to our wonderful sponsor Hollywood Suite.
