It doesn’t get more iconic than NOSFERATU—F.W. Murnau’s vampiric urtext that established the Dracula legend for generations of cinephiles, and the crown jewel of German Expressionist filmmaking.

An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which was first published just twenty-five years prior, NOSFERATU sees Max Schreck portray Count Orlok, a more otherworldly, more outwardly monstrous version of Count Dracula. The film’s release in 1922 made much of Schreck’s mysterious reputation, implying the possibility that Schreck and Orlok were one in the same. With its setting transposed from the book’s London to Wisborg, Germany, NOSFERATU is a true Weimar milestone. It both stands as the ultimate Dracula adaptation, while occupying an uncanniness that is entirely of its own. See the original that inspired the recent Robert Eggers gothic super production, and experience Count Orlok as he was meant to be seen—sans moustache!
