Spring is finally here, and Hold Up is kicking off mating season with one of the freshest teen movies of the 90s. She’s All That is a hip, adolescent spin on the Pygmalion trope – take the nerdy girl’s glasses off and – surprise – she’s hot af. Essentially an extended music video for Sixpence None The Richer’s “Kiss Me”, She’s All That is an iconic high school transformation story that will make you laugh, cry, and wonder why anyone thought a hacky sack was a cool accessory.
When Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr)’s girlfriend cheats on him with a reality TV star (Mr-Steal-Yo-Girl himself, Matthew Lillard), he accepts a bet to turn homely art student Laney Boggs (Rachel Leigh Cook) into the hottest girl in the school. Luckily, underneath the prescription frames and denim overalls is a bonafide hottie who needs little more than lipstick and a pair of contacts to validate her worth as a sexual conquest and win her the crown. Zack catches feelings for his social experiment just in time for his jealous ex to take notice and humiliate Laney at ‘the party’. Does this singular interaction turn the shallow jock with perfect hair into an actual human with feelings? Will Laney learn Zack’s true motives and instead attend prom with some dude named Dean? Will Matthew Lillard ever come down from his coke high in that dance scene? Only time, and a thousand other movies that follow the exact same formula, will tell. Luckily, everyone in this movie is so attractive that it really doesn’t matter. (ALICE ROSE)
