SHORTCOMINGS with writer/cartoonist Adrian Tomine In Attendance!

Canada | 2023 | 92 minutes | PG

Toronto Comic Arts Festival presents “Shortcomings”, a touching and comedic exploration of identity and relationships. Shortcomings not only marks the directorial debut of Randall Park. This motion picture is adapted from the critically acclaimed graphic novel of the same name by Adrian Tomine.

In Berkeley, California, Ben (Justin H. Min), a struggling filmmaker, lives with his girlfriend Miko (Ally Maki), who works at a local Asian American film festival. By day, Ben manages an art house theater, but outside of work, he fills his time obsessing over unavailable blonde women, immersing himself in Criterion Collection DVDs, and frequenting diners with his best friend Alice (Sherry Cola), a queer grad student with a serial dating habit. However, when Miko departs for a New York internship, Ben finds himself at a crossroads, embarking on a journey of self-exploration that leads him to question his desires, seek out new relationships, and embrace unfamiliar experiences.

Shortcomings delves deep into the complexities of human connection, cultural dissonance, and the search for self in a world fraught with expectations.

Join us at Revue Cinema on Saturday, May 11, for a special TCAF screening of “Shortcomings,” and a special post-show Q&A session with the acclaimed writer and cartoonist Adrian Tomine. Moderated by TCAF’s Ho Che Anderson. This discussion will explore the unique insights into the creative process behind the film and the themes it explores.
