PRESENTED ON 35MM!

September marks the one-year anniversary of The Black Nerds official programming at The Revue Cinema. We invite you to join us for a special back-to-school screening of John Singleton’s Higher Learning (1995), presented in crisp 35mm film. In this day and age, the themes explored in Higher Learning are more pertinent than ever. Set on the campus of the fictional Columbus University, Higher Learning interweaves the stories of three freshmen wrestling with identity and belonging. Malik (Omar Epps) is a star runner who finds his perspective challenged by militant Fudge (Ice Cube) and the demanding Professor Phipps (Laurence Fishburne). Kristen (Kristy Swanson), a sheltered young woman, joins a women’s group following a traumatic experience, where she grows in confidence and begins to discern her sexual identity. Finally, Remy (Michael Rapaport), lonely and awkward, finds a darker sort of belonging with a group of white supremacists. Unlikely connections form and tensions build, leading to a violent series of events.

With John Singleton’s intimate familiarity with the environments and characters depicted in Boyz n the Hood and Poetic JusticeHigher Learning is especially evident in his nuanced storytelling. Rather than presenting characters that simply fit into specific roles, Singleton asks critical questions about their identities and circumstances. He complicates the notion of privilege, presenting characters who must navigate the complexities of their identities and the intersecting social dynamics at play. This approach underscores the idea that identity is not a monolith, but a multifaceted experience influenced by numerous factors. With almost 30 years since its release, Higher Learning is more necessary and relevant than ever and urging us to reflect on the ongoing evolution of critical race theory.

Content Warning: Higher Learning contains scenes and themes that may be distressing to some viewers, including racial violence, sexual assault, and hate speech. Viewer discretion is advised.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to The Revue Cinema and Program Director, Serena Whitney for making it possible to showcase this remarkable film in 35mm. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Higher Learning and to commemorate a year of programming by The Black Nerds. Secure your tickets now at Revuecinema.ca.
