WINNER OF WILD CARD CAGE!
With very few roles under his belt, Cage signed on the play Al Columbato opposite Matthew Modine in Alan Parker’s fiercely unique and moving BIRDY. Set in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, BIRDY is the tale of two working-class high school students grappling with the lead-up to Vietnam and their inevitable draft. Both boys, fascinated by birds’ ability to fly, become obsessed with their rooftop aviary. With “Birdy” (Modine) taking the obsession to an extreme.
Winner of the Grand Prix Prize at Cannes, Cage’s first dramatic success proved a milestone in his burgeoning career. Charismatic and nuanced, his performance foreshadowed future career achievements, like LEAVING LAS VEGAS and PIG. BIRDY is a 1980s gem and one of the under-assessed and underappreciated titles in Cage’s filmography. With a beautiful score from Peter Gabriel and groundbreaking cinematography from Michael Seresin, BIRDY is an uncompromising film that helped cement Cage’s reputation, and as such, it is an essential UnCAGED experience.
