WINNER OF MANIC CAGE!

Some films tell you exactly what the film is about in their title, and none more so, or more succinctly than John Woo’s FACE/OFF. We get not one, but three Cages in FACE/OFF—Cage as criminal genius Castor Troy; Cage as FBI agent Sean Archer, and Travolta, delivering an astute, mesmerizing Cage performance as Castor Troy trapped behind the visage of his arch-nemesis. It’s complicated, and we’re guessing you know the plot, so we’ll stop there.

FACE/OFF ushered in a wave of Kabuki Cage performances, and action-packed daring, yet the film also demonstrated his profound dramatic chops – Cage was relatively fresh off his Oscar win for LEAVING LAS VEGAS, and his performance as grieving father Sean Archer is as moving as his performance as Castor Troy is ribald. An action masterpiece in legendary director John Woo’s career, FACE/OFF is a big-screen must, and on 35mm, you get not one, but two chances—in the same evening—to take in the glory of the film’s bullet ballet and speed-boat chase sequence.
