Of Gods and Men

2010 (Xavier Beauvois) 14A, 117 minutes - French with English subtitles

Lambert Wilson, Michael Lonsdale, Olivier Rabourdin, Philippe Laudenbach

In 1996, seven Trappist monks who remained in an Algerian community, despite threats from fundamentalist groups, were kidnapped and murdered. This is the story of how and why they decided to stay in the community even after the government instructed them to return to France. Starring Lambert Wilson, Michael Lonsdale and Olivier Rabourdin, Of Gods and Men (in french with subtitles) was awarded the Grand Prix at Cannes last year. Highly regarded, this film deals with issues of the clash of religion and culture, and how religious fundamentalism affects the community at large.
