20th anniversary of IT’S ALL GONE PETE TONG, the raucous Ibiza superstar DJ mockumentary directed by Michael Dowse (FUBAR)! Screening a 35mm print!

A wickedly funny and grotesque expose of one all-star bloke on a hot streak who’s precarious life of excess goes down the toilet, only to find a seemingly impossible rejuvenation and rebirth, IT’S ALL GONE PETE TONG tells the story of Frankie Wilde, British superstar DJ, who has been abusing his body (and his ears) in Ibiza clubs for years as the island’s nightlife king. When his hearing starts to falter and finally disappear entirely, his livelihood, his fame, his marriage to his trophy wife, his highly anticipated new album made with two Austrian mates (“Everybody should have at least two Austrian mates”), and his cocaine habit are all suddenly blowing up.

Led by a bravado performance by Paul Kaye who shamelessly, fearlessly scrapes the bottom of the barrel as the ultimate partyman hitting rock bottom, IT’S ALL GONE PETE TONG feels, in 2024, very much like the coked-up boozed-up dance mix version of 2019’s SOUND OF METAL – the same story of a musical artist coping with the shock of sudden deafness, and learning, eventually, to accept their situation and the crucial assistance of people who’ve dealt with the disability all their lives – albeit through a way boozier lens. PETE TONG balances excess, absurdity, hilarity, reality, and pathos remarkably well. I can’t think of another movie where so much tension and stress resides on someone successfully fading one song into another song. Also it features a cocaine badger.

Spinning exclusively early 2000s Ibiza club mixes before the film.
