Stompbox: SUBOTNICK: PORTRAIT OF AN ELECTRONIC MUSIC PIONEER + Live Performance by Michael Palumbo!

2022 | 88 minutes | NR

With director Robert Fantinatto in person!

Plus live modular synth performance by Michael Palumbo!

Subotnick: Portrait of an Electronic Music Pioneer – from the makers of the acclaimed modular synthesizer documentary I Dream Of Wires – explores the fascinating life of avant-garde music pioneer Morton Subotnick, whose breakthrough debut album “Silver Apples of the Moon” from 1967 was the world’s first electronic music composition specifically created for the record medium.

At 90 years of age, Subotnick has become a cult figure for a whole new generation that have come to recognize him as ‘The Father of Techno’. Through a series of candid interviews and illuminating conversations with key figures from his past and present, the film provides an overview of this fascinating composer’s rich life and uncompromising career, as well as live performances captured in surround sound and augmented with innovative liquid-light psychedelic effects. Subotnick is a multimedia experience that celebrates one of the world’s most influential living composers.

About the performer:

Michael Palumbo (MA, BFA) is a musician, teacher, and concert promoter. His approach to microsound on modular synthesis involves filter pinging, delays, and stereo panning, and he improvises often as a soloist and in ensembles. Michael is a PhD candidate in Digital Media at York University where is working on Mischmasch, a virtual reality environment for ensemble electroacoustic music improvisation. He produces Exit Points, a  monthly series that presents free-improvised music in concerts that are thoroughly well-produced and attended, and is funded by the Toronto Arts Council. Michael also runs the Exit Points record label, which releases albums recorded live at the concerts and subsequently mixed in Dolby Atmos.
