25th Anniversary Screening!

What better way to give a bitter farewell to youth than a punk rock party? HOLD UP programmer Alice Rose turns 40 this month, and to mark four decades of misanthropic existence, we are screening SLC Punk!, James Merendino’s 1999 tribute to the punk rock revolution. Join us at Revue Cinema for the loudest movie HOLD UP has ever screened. No posers. No mods. No skinheads. Just an instantly gripping thrill ride of a film that will have you questioning your core principles. Perfectly cast, brilliantly edited, and paired with a killer soundtrack, SLC Punk! is a surprisingly reverent story tucked inside a grungy, randomly violent punk rock romp.

Set in the Mormon capital of the world in 1985, SLC Punk catalogues the personal apocalypse of Stevo (Matthew Lillard), an angry and rebellious teenage punk. Evading the pressures of his divorced hypocrite parents to apply to Harvard Law, Stevo and his best friend Bob (Michael A Goorjian) go to parties and concerts amid the emerging punk scene. In shocking contrast to the ultra-conservative Mormon landscape of Salt Lake City, Stevo and his friends stand for anarchy, chaos, and rebellion. But when an encounter with an old friend (Devon Sawa) forces him to face the consequences of his punk rock values, Stevo grows increasingly violent and self-destructive. Can he sustain the idyllic lifestyle he created for himself, or is he in fact just another god damn poser?  (ALICE ROSE)

Director: James Merendino
